Jordan with over 60,000 EVs on the road

The year 2022 marked the clearance of roughly 56,000 vehicles, with a roughly 180 per cent increase in the clearance of electric cars, according to the Jordan Free Zone Investor Commission (JFZIC). There are 54 power-charging stations currently in the country and there are licenses to build 92 more stations across Jordan. Over the past few years, many Jordanians have transitioned to using electric vehicles instead of cars running on gasoline and diesel due to high local fuel prices.

Jordan was an early adopter of electric vehicles as, unlike its neighbours, the country is not an oil producer. A year earlier, Emirates Transport, the UAE’s government-owned public transport provider, signed a memorandum of understanding with the China Machinery Engineering Corporation to produce electric vehicles locally, looking to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Charging as a Service (CaaS) is therefore expected to grow in 2023. Put simply, it’s the idea that offering a service for motorists to charge their vehicles isn’t enough to generate significant revenue (unless delivered on a mass scale). In the past, the bugbear for any EV driver was petrol or diesel vehicles blocking working charging points. This EV charging trend is expected to continue in 2023 – especially when it comes to solar and domestic-scale wind generation. After all, the energy price crisis rumbles on with no sign of abating any time soon, meaning consumers are being forced to take matters into their own hands.
